U91 petrol prices across Australia
U91 — unleaded 91 — is the most widely sold fuel grade in Australia. It is available at virtually every service station from Perth to Sydney, and tracking where it is cheapest right now can save a meaningful amount over a year of regular fill-ups.
What is U91?
U91 is standard unleaded petrol with a Research Octane Number (RON) of at least 91. It is the base-grade petrol mandated to be available at all Australian service stations. The “U” indicates it is unleaded (no lead additives); the “91” is the minimum octane rating.
Most petrol-engined vehicles sold in Australia are designed to run on U91 — it is the “regular” option. Older vehicles with lower compression ratios or without a knock sensor are particularly suited to U91. Vehicles that specify a higher octane (such as 95 or 98) should not use U91 as their primary fuel, as it can cause engine knock and long-term damage.
Which cars use U91?
U91 is the correct fuel for most mainstream petrol vehicles including the majority of Toyota, Mazda, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi, and entry-level Volkswagen and Ford models. If your fuel cap or owner's manual specifies “unleaded petrol” without a minimum octane above 91, U91 is appropriate.
Vehicles that specify “premium unleaded” or list a minimum RON of 95 or 98 should use U95 or U98 respectively. Using U91 in these vehicles can void warranty and cause engine damage over time. Check the fuel types guide if you are unsure which grade your vehicle requires.
Typical U91 price range in Australia
U91 prices vary significantly across Australia. Capital city prices typically range from around 170–220 cents per litre depending on the current cycle phase, with the spread between the cheapest and most expensive station in a city commonly reaching 30–40 cents per litre on a single day.
Regional and remote areas typically pay a premium above capital city prices — 10–30 cents per litre in regional centres, and significantly more in very remote locations where logistics costs are high. Perth, which operates the FuelWatch scheme, is often among the most price-transparent markets in the country.
Where to find cheap U91
U91 prices are lowest at the bottom of the price cycle in capital cities, at high-competition suburban corridors, and at independent stations and budget brands. Timing your fill-up using Refuelr's price cycle indicator — available for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth — is the most reliable way to consistently pay less for U91.
Refuelr sources U91 prices from official government feeds in NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, WA, and NT — refreshed every 30 minutes. Set a price alert for your local station to get notified automatically when U91 drops below your target price.
