U98 petrol prices across Australia
U98 is the highest-grade petrol widely available at Australian service stations. It is required by some high-performance and luxury vehicles, and chosen voluntarily by drivers of vehicles tuned to extract maximum benefit from a higher octane rating. Finding the cheapest U98 is especially worthwhile given its price premium over standard unleaded.
What is U98?
U98 is super-premium unleaded petrol with a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 98. It has the highest octane rating among standard pump grades in Australia. Higher octane fuel resists auto-ignition (knock) at higher pressures, which allows engines with high compression ratios or aggressive ignition advance to operate at their designed performance level.
U98 typically costs 15–25 cents per litre more than U91. On a 60-litre tank that adds $9–15 per fill-up — which makes finding the cheapest U98 station in your area a genuine cost-saving exercise over the course of a year.
Which cars use U98?
U98 is specified by high-performance and prestige vehicles including many AMG, M Sport, RS, and GTS variants from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, and Porsche. Some sports models from Subaru, Nissan, and Mitsubishi also specify 98 RON. Older performance vehicles with high-compression naturally aspirated engines benefit from the knock resistance of U98.
If your vehicle's owner's manual states “minimum 98 RON,” using a lower grade will cause the engine management system to retard timing, reducing performance and potentially increasing wear. See our fuel types guide for detailed octane compatibility information.
U98 availability across Australia
U98 is available at most major-brand stations in metropolitan areas. BP Ultimate, Shell V-Power, Ampol Amplify, and Caltex Vortex are common U98 products. Coverage is less consistent in smaller regional towns, where only U91 and diesel may be available.
Refuelr tracks U98 prices from official government feeds across NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, WA, and NT — giving you a real-time view of where U98 is cheapest in your area, refreshed every 30 minutes.
